My First Art Show - Chapel of Jimmy Ray Art Gallery - August 10, 2024, 1 - 5pm

On August 10, 2024, from 1pm - 5pm, at the Chapel of Jimmy Ray in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, alongside several talented artists whose work I love and admire, I’ll be exhibiting my artwork for the first time. I’m thrilled, excited, honored, humbled, and…a little nervous.

As I’ve written in The Seeker’s Notebook, I’ve been surrounded by art and artists all my life; however, I did not begin creating images until the early days of the pandemic in 2020. It has since become a way of life that feels more authentic and meaningful than anything I’ve ever done. It’s been a challenging, expansive, and satisfying adventure getting to where I now have over 20 pieces of art to share with my community.

Queen Mother, 2023. Mixed-media collage with encaustic wax finish on wood panel, 18 1/2” x 27 1/2 x 1 1/2”.

Being a Seeker is an integral part of who I am and what fuels my interest in art, travel, and writing, as well as psycho-spiritual exploration. Having been a student of biology, depth and spiritual psychologies, ontological inquiry, yoga, and comparative mythology for most of my adult life, it is no surprise that my artwork has emerged as a visual exploration at the crossroads of nature, myth, and identity.

The Birth of Paradox, 2024. Mixed-media collage with encaustic and indigo-painted wood frame, 16” x 21 1/2” x 1 1/2”.

I support the notion that myth emerges from nature, and our identities emerge from the myths we are living. I like to explore my identity and the mythological narratives of my life in a free-form style when creating an image or object. Though I never aim for a specific statement in my art, I feel strongly that my artwork has a lot to say to me (and to us). I believe that the images coming from my table are messages from a place of deeper understanding within myself, as though I’m having a conversation with myself in a wakeful dream (The Fool and The Wise One having coffee at an imaginal café).

My Animal Nature, 2023. Mixed-media collage with encaustic wax finish on wood panel, 11” x 14” x 1 1/2”.

I see my visual art, my essays, and my spiritual practices as interrelated and existing on a continuum of my deepest questions, embodied values, and highest ideals, always in service to healing (or “whole-ing”) on both a personal and collective level. Although these images are coming through my individual consciousness, their power lies in their connection to the collective unconscious. Each image has symbolic layers and potential meanings that reveal themselves in their own time through intuitive gestalt rather than logical flowcharts, ripening in each viewer’s consciousness as a personal message just for them.

Some Kind of Psychopomp, 2023. Mixed-media collage on wood box panel, 20” x 23” x 1 1/2”.

We all know that encountering art in person has an impact that isn’t readily translated digitally; that’s why we have galleries and museums! My work has only been seen digitally by the public, so I hope you’ll come see what messages might be waiting for you as you contemplate these surreal images.

Come let yourself be immersed and transported by our “Summer Groove”! It will be a beautiful, fun, celebratory summer afternoon of encountering art, community, and nature. As Anado always said, “Be there!!”

After Georgia, 2017. A reproduction of the original photograph by Christy Higgins finished with encaustic wax, 7 1/2” x 10”.
